Embracing the in between

Konbonwa!

The week in particular went by a bit slower, but as always the weekend flew by. I have  a few recent yummies even though we have been on a “diet”. Disclaimer: I don’t really believe in diets. I believe in altering the way I eat as a “reset” but if I change it too drastically, and it becomes something I hate/feel like I’m depriving myself it just doesn’t last.

So we’ve just been making things a little less complicated and trying to have better portion control. I’ve been eating 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast and tea with honey in the morning around 7:30. Then, around 10:30 I have a kiwi and/or banana if the banana is a little one. We always have whatever we had for dinner the previous night for lunch. We’ve been doing the following meals: chicken with kimchi and sauteed veggies, baked chicken with roasted veggies, and a salad with baked tuna or salmon. When you switch up the veggies and seasonings, it hasn’t been bad at all! Don’t get me wrong we definitely have an occasional cheat meal or two. Like Pariwar happens once a week… that will be my very, very enjoyable cheat meal. No shame in that.

Last weekend we tried a new Turkish restaurant downtown that we have tried to go to a couple times. It’s pretty small so this time we were smart and made a reservation way in advance to make sure we could get in. Before that we saw this sexy man in 50 shades of grey and also did a bit of shopping at forever 21. The shopping in Forever is so much more organized and actually had a better selection than in America! Some great buys and I will definitely be back 🙂

This gave me a little taste of Israel and the mediterranean type of food I’m missing. There was one chef and a waitress, but the atmosphere of the place was welcoming and the food was simply delicious. It’s always nice to find new restaurants around here since we usually end up going to the same 3. This was a keeper, we will be back! 🙂

The main reason that provoked this post was an event that happened at school this week. A high school student was inspired to organize an International Day/Global Citizens Day. She is from Burma and found that most people had no idea where that is (myself included) or anything about their culture. She wanted to create a day for students to teach others about their culture as well as learn about other cultures other than their own. After presenting the idea to the teachers, and some organizational help, her dream came true. Not going to lie, it was a bit chaotic before hand and I thought the day was going to be a hot mess as big events like this can be. (It was for the entire school- pre-school up until 12th grade.) I was pleasantly surprised when the day ran smoothly and I was in tears by the end of the day.

I helped out in gym by leading some Zumba and the kids played olympic winter games. They rotated between different rotations all morning participating in various activities. The highlight of the day however, was the parade of nations. Each country that is represented in our school was called and students carried the flag and paraded around showing their pride. I was in awe by 2 things: 1. How one student made her dream come true and I have no doubt this will now be a NIS tradition to continue. 2. How much diversity there is at our school and how special it truly is. Each student has a different background and experiences that brings so much flavor to the classroom. It made me sad because I’m going to miss being a part of this next year. It makes me wish I was saying, but I’m trying to embrace the “in-between”, this stage where I don’t know what’s next yet. I have so much to be thankful for and in a sense, I made my dream happen just like that student. I’m living it, right here and now until I know what the next dream is. 🙂

Another great event this week: the 100th day of school!! I still can’t believe it’s almost March. That means my birthday is almost here (yikes, 23!) and that there are about 3 months left… SLOW DOWN TIME. Anywho, dressing up like grannies was soooo much fun and I will definitely be doing this again. Half the kids/teachers didn’t even recognize me. Plus we couldn’t find baby powder and we were resourceful and used flour hahah. It worked so well and I rocked my babushka. Oy vey I looked hot

This weekend we went hiking up Mt. Sanage! I don’t think we actually made it up all the way but we hiked for about 2 hours and it was straight uphill, it was a fantastic sweat. It was a bit foggy BUT this was the first time we didn’t get lost or hit too much traffic. Katiria and I may or may not have said a quick positive prayer hoping for this before we left. It worked 🙂

After a nice warm shower, grocery shopping and a quick nap, we tried another new restaurant! We tried this Indonesian restaurant downtown that someone recommended. We got lost because they apparently have moved but didn’t update their English site… but we found it!

The food was really good, this was my first time having Indonesian food. Leah, Anna and Katiria went to Bali over October break so they knew what to expect. They said the spices weren’t quite the same but still really good. I would love to go back here. Except next time I will be checking the dancing schedule because downstairs was the most heinous music ever. There was a special Balinese dancing performance with music that sounded like 3 year olds banging on all sorts of instruments SOOOO loudly. It was horrible. But we escaped and walked to this little wine bar through the hobbit door for a bit.

Next weekend we are off to Tokyo and then after that we have Nagano (snow monkeys and snowboarding!!!) and then Cambodia… so many travels coming up 🙂

Long weekend in Osaka and Kyoto

Ohayo gozaimasu!

Currently in bed not feeling so well but hopefully it will pass soon. I owe you a post about last weekend’s long weekend so here we go!

Osaka:

This was my first time staying at an air bnb and it was fabulous! We hit the roads as soon as we could but hit traffic and got lost a couple of times so we didn’t get to Osaka until around 9:30 -___- But we met the guy, Ian who we were renting the apartment from. It was a close walk to a nearby station and a couple restaurants so it was super convenient. It wasn’t big by any means but there was a big bed and a comfy pull out couch so it we just fit! It was definitely a cheaper option but really a great fit for us. As soon as he gave us the tour, we got ready to hit the town. Ladies night, duh.

We had lots of fun and bounced around a couple of places and made it back way past my bedtime. It was so fun to be silly and shake our booties. We know we all have those nights where you go out and say “I just wanna dance”. That was definitely this night 🙂 We had a great brunch of okonomiyaki which is one of Osaka’s specialties! We shared a couple different dishes and it was so nom.

We were debating going to Universal Studios since I’ve been dying to go to Harry Potter world but we were all pretty tired soo we decided on shopping which Osaka is known for too. We hit up h&m which is way nicer here in Japan and I got some great things 🙂

I might go back for Universal Studios but I’m not sure. Osaka was fun to go out in, some good food and shopping but still kinda like a normal city. I was pumped to head back to Kyoto!

Kyoto:

Luckily the drive from Osaka to Kyoto wasn’t too bad at all. We were starving humans so we hit up the first restaurant we could find that seemed edible which was sushi.

I was really excited that we had heard about Fushimi Inari since I didn’t get to do that with Sherry when she was here. The biggest surprise was that we thought it was going to be just a little stroll but it was more like a 2 hour uphill hike with stairs. It was a nice sunny day too so I was SHVITZING (sweating) and had to strip down to my tank top. But it felt good to move and groove and see lots of tori gates (the big red ones) and also see tons of shrines along the way.

The second place we were staying at in Kyoto was also on air bnb but a much different experience. First of all we got lost the first night and when putting the address into google maps it took us to a place with the same name (apparently it’s a chain) but not in the right area. We kept ringing the doorbell and nothing happened so we figured it couldn’t be right since the person we were in contact with said they were waiting for us but couldn’t see us.

It was pouring and we were trying to contact the place but they weren’t really helpful at all. This old man saw us walking in the rain trying to get our lives together and invited us into his shop. After they insisted on talking to the place for us, they ended up driving us to show us how to get there. I know mom, you’re probably reading this thinking LINDSAY WHAT HAVE I TAUGHT YOU?! But only in Japan would this be okay. They were the sweetest couple and I wish I had taken a picture of them to remember them forever because they are absolute angels. Anyways, it was an 120 year old Japanese style guesthouse/ryokan that had be renovated.

The nightmare continued thought because I was in charge of navigating and on Sunday night after a a nice Italian dinner we tried getting home. We saved the pin of where we were staying this time so I used that and somehow WE ENDED UP BACK AT THE OLD PLACE. Anna held her hands up and was like nooooooo. Positive me didn’t want to believe it I was like no no it must just be around the corner. But no it wasn’t -___- thankfully a cab was only about $20 but I still felt so bad. The nightmares continued…

Sooo Saturday night I woke up in the middle of the night to a message from Anna to all of us saying “ARE YOU AWAKE”. I forgot to ask about it in the morning but when I went to go into the shower the receptionist working at the ryokan knocked on the door and pointed to this sliding door and was like “You did last night? You broke glass?” I had no idea what she was talking about until I realized the entire pane of glass almost was broken. Turns out Anna was in the bathroom area to do a video chat for a possible job. She had asked if she could move the receptionist desk and chair into the bathroom area for the skype so she wouldn’t wake up other guests. The chair somehow broke and she fell backwards into the glass and it shattered on her!!! Very very scary. So here’s my advice: don’t go to a Machiya ryokan ever because you will get lost multiple times and might need to find the nice old couple to drive you. Also don’t do an interview in a bathroom because chances are the little Japanese chairs can’t hold you so you will break it, fall and break glass. Oh and they will charge you $700 on a scrap piece of paper. Take this advice seriously. Case closed.

Recent Fun and Yums

Konnichiwa!!

This past week wasn’t too exciting except for the new recipes I tried.  So many new ones so enjoy the pictures below! Last weekend however we did a couple of new things. We tried a new Thai restaurant that was okay. Definitely not as good as the food in actual Thailand but it was nice to go somewhere new that we haven’t tried yet.

Our new purchases from vitacost.com. Yes, 3 bottles of sriracha cause that was the minimum you can purchase. But knowing me, (and now KK who is a fan) we will finish them all by the end of the year! Also trying new protein power, Vega. I got one Vanilla and one Vanilla Chai… I like them both a lot.

Cookie dough cereal is super easy! Just about 1/2 cup of oats, 1/2 scoop of protein powder, 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of nutmeg. Mix that together and then add milk until it looks like cereal. Top with fruit of your choice 🙂 I ended up doing frozen berries the second time which I liked a lot better!

Before that we went out to El Coco for a salsa dancing class. A couple weekends ago when we were there I asked one of the old men (yes) where he learned how to dance and he said that they have lessons on Saturdays. So we showed up around 6:20 for a 6:30 class and no one was there so we were a bit nervous, butttt more people ended up showing up. We started in two lines facing the mirror following the teacher doing some basic steps. The dancer in me was super giddy just so happy to be in a formal dance class. I slowly but surely started to feel like a dumby though because the moves progressively got harder and harder especially once we started dancing with a partner. After some mirror work just doing the basics, we rotated between partners. It got complicated real fast but it was so fun! After twenty minutes everyone stopped to go pay and we were so confused because we paid $15 and had no idea what was happening. Then the class started up again- turns out that was the free twenty minute session, the real class started after that. I guess that’s what happens when you are taking a salsa class in Japanese haha

The next day we went over the house of a student of mine for lunch. We surprised her and it was so nice to be welcomed into a home! We chatted for over 4 hours so definitely some good bonding time. The parents lived in Israel for a couple of years so we definitely had a lot to talk about :). I even got to see pictures from when they were there which was cool. She cooked an impeccable meal it was unreal. She was cracking me up because she was like my Jewish grandmothers who can never accept you’re full and they just want to keep piling your plate. My food baby had a food baby, but I don’t regret any of it. We hung out all afternoon and just shared random stories which was nice. Aarushi was definitely loving having her teachers at her house she just wanted to show us everything! This is something I will truly miss next year in the states. It’s hard for me to imagine being invited over a families house when working at a public school or something. But here it doesn’t seem weird at all, teachers are respected but also acknowledged as human beings who have a life too.

This whole month has been a struggle. I’ve felt sleep derived and the kids have also been a bit off. Maybe it’s the full moon but either way I couldn’t be happier that we have a long weekend!! We are off to Kyoto and Osaka now!

More on that later 🙂
